The year is 2022 but Y2K is forever! The 2000s trend is definitely not a new one, but we are still obsessed with it and it’s only getting bigger, always being spotted on celebrities like Dua Lipa and Bella Hadid as well as on TikTok - although it’s important to note that a lot of the trends within Y2K are drawn from black culture & black celebrities like icons Destiny’s Child and Mel B.
The 2000s was such an exciting time for fashion - not only on the runway but street style and the way celebrities dressed was so vibrant, unique and expressive. Even though a lot of these outfits are questionable now (hello Ashley Tisdale we love you queen but let’s not bring back skirts over jeans), the creativity was off the grid.
Here’s how you can achieve the Y2K look with some Koi shoes and whatever is always in your wardrobe, whether you’re into athleisure, girly looks or something with more attitude. Yes, it’s that easy.
FLUFFY THONG SANDALS
Lizzie McGuire vibes TBH. A pair of thong sandals is perfect for effortless summer street style, off-duty model who? Check out our Sugar Paws Fluffy Blue Platform Thong Sandals.
These baddies will make you feel like a baddie - they have a black chunky platform and bold blue faux fur (100% vegan of course) to either pair with all black ‘fits or co-ordinate with a fluffy blue bikini top and mini skirt in ‘90s Gwen Stefani style. Or even get your finest velour Juicy tracksuit on for off-duty Britney Spears vibes.
BUTTERFLY CHARM PLATFORM SANDALS
Butterflies are a classic ‘00s symbol and they’ve been seen on celebs in the past like Mariah Carey, and more recently on Dua Lipa and on the runway from iconic brands like Blumarine.
The details really aren’t lacking here, not only is there the silver butterfly charm, but these sandals have been finished off with the cutest checkered print and black platform soles to top off the Y2K look. These platform sandals come in purple or blue colour ways, and they wouldn’t look out of place at the park or just for an iconic at-home photoshoot.
Childhood favourite but make it fashion. I personally miss the jelly shoes I used to wear when I was younger, so having the opportunity to wear an elevated, modernised version of these shoes is a life-changing opportunity. Who else remembers these from the Tumblr era, too?
For more dressed up looks, we’ve got some strappy jelly sandals: the Lollipops Pink Strappy Sandals, which have a mini heel to take your day look to an evening look. These are in a sweet pink with rainbow coloured straps to make sure all eyes are on you. Pair these with a block coloured summer dress to dress up or go more chilled with some trousers.
It gets better: our Tutti Frutti Black Jelly Flatform Sandals are chunky black strappy jelly sandals with fruity charms fresh out of a retro video game are just what you need to elevate an all black ‘fit or match with cherry print farms in festival season.
Get festival ready - a pair of platform boots is just what you need for added height and a stomp factor. The chunkier, the better, and we’ve got black platform boots as well as white platform boots, so whether you’re going for a darker look or a brighter, whiter look we’ve got you covered.
Pair these with vintage Nike or Adidas tracksuit bottoms (low waisted if you dare) and a crop top or bikini top in Bella Hadid style for a simple but effective festival look.
BRATZ-STYLE MEGA HEELS
OG baddies will understand the Bratz obsession. Some doll-like platform heels in bold colours or in punky black are the perfect way to add attitude to your look. We would pair these with a pleated micro mini skirt and a fishnet top or mesh top for the full effect.
These aren’t for the faint hearted - but they’re worth it.
Sporty spice who? Chunky trainers are a Y2K wardrobe essential. Not only are you given added height, but you’re gonna be in ultimate comfort AND look iconic.
These are perfect with any kind of chilled aesthetic for an effortless cool-girl look. Or, if you’re feeling Rio Wellard vibes get your dad’s flame shirt and jorts on.
If you’re into sportier styles, check out the all white Lizzies V2 Extra Chunky Trainers. Or if these aren’t enough added height for you and you’re an all-black gal, we’ve got the Chronicles Vilun Platform Trainers.
At Koi we have plenty of vegan shoes that nod at the 2000s (as well as the 90s), so take a look at our hot selection if you’re feeling nostalgic.
